Recognising Lies
In John 8:44, the enemy is referred to as the father of lies. He loves to lie to believers about God’s nature and about who they are. When we listen to his lies, our relationship with God suffers, and we stop living as the people we’re called to be. So how do we recognise his lies, especially when they attack our identity in Christ?
Sometimes the Lies We Believe Are Obvious
For example:When I was praying for my mum to be healed from cancer, I had the thought, "I should stop praying because my prayers aren’t making a difference."This is an obvious lie because James 5:16 says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
Sometimes We’re Not Aware We’re Believing Lies
It’s only when someone says something to us, or we respond in a certain way, that the truth about what’s going on in our hearts is revealed.
For example:When someone encouraged me by saying I was a gift to the church, I began to cry. That response revealed pain in my heart and wrong thinking.
Tip: Growing in self-awareness — paying attention to how you feel, behave, or respond in situations — can help you identify where your thinking about your identity doesn’t align with Scripture.
It's so important that we go on a journey of recognising the lies we're believing so that we can ask the Father what the truth is. Take a look at my 'Recognising Lies and Receiving Truth' document HERE to find out how.
As we increasingly learn to listen to the Father's voice we will grow in humility and security and be able to more confidently be who He's called us to be. Remember that this is a lifelong journey - we never fully arrive when it comes to knowing our true identity in Christ (not this side of heaven anyway!). Be kind to yourself as you recognise and unravel lies and be intentional about receiving and rehearsing the truth.
You ARE loved so extravagantly and have immeasurable value to Him. You HAVE been adopted as a son or daughter of the God of the universe. Nothing can change these truths, and nothing can change your position in the Father's heart.
